Carlo Ancelotti makes Real Madrid injury admission after Arsenal handed Raheem Sterling blow
by Bruna Reis · football.londonArsenal could be handed a major boost for their Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid.
Mikel Arteta's side progressed to the last-eight after a 9-3 aggregate win over PSV Eindhoven. Arsenal sealed a 7-1 win at the Phillips Stadion in the first leg last week, before drawing 2-2 draw on Wednesday night.
Oleksandr Zinchenko scored the opening goal inside 10 minutes, cutting in from the right after a superb pass from Raheem Sterling before curling a shot into the corner. The visitors responded shortly after when former Tottenham forward Ivan Perisic exploited some free space before lobbing David Raya.
Sterling then set-up Arsenal's second before the interval, clipping in a cross for Declan Rice, who headed it in. The visitors then equalised on 70 minutes as Couhaib Driouech took advantage of the Gunners’ defence being high up the field.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, had to overcome Atletico Madrid on penalties. Conor Gallagher's only goal of the night meant that the tie was taken to extra-time.
The game was eventually settled on penalties (4-2) after Antonio Rudiger scored the decisive spot kick. Atletico's Julian Alvarez struck a double touch, meaning his penalty would not count - while Marcos Llorent hit the crossbar.
Despite the win, Real were dealt an injury blow to Ferland Mendy. He was forced to withdraw in the 83rd minute with a suspected muscle injury.
"I can't say yet. I also think it's a muscle injury because I feel a sharp pain in the back, so it could be a muscle injury. They'll evaluate it in the next few days," Ancelotti told reporters after the game.
With that said, Sterling will miss the quarter-final first leg tie against Real Madrid as he was booked in last minute during the second leg draw with PSV Eindhoven. The on-loan attacker, who set up both goals for his team, ended the evening on a sour note.
Jurrien Timber and Gabriel Martinelli are also one booking away from a one-match ban, but they only came on in the closing stages. The could still miss the second leg away Spain's capital if they are cautioned in the first match.
