Chelsea handed stark Roman Abramovich warning amid goalkeeper message to Enzo Maresca

by · football.london

Chelsea are preparing for a crucial Premier League clash against Leicester City.

The Blues beat FC Copenhagen 2-1 in the first leg of the UEFA Conference League last in midweek, thanks to goals from Reece James and the ever-reliable Enzo Fernandez. That puts Enzo Maresca's side into the driving seat heading into the second leg next week.

Having not won a trophy since 2021, the quest for glory goes on and the European competition presents Chelsea's only remaining chance at a trophy. That being said, a top-four finish is still not out of the question and a win against City this weekend would go a long way to achieving that wish. Below are some of the latest headlines surrounding the Blues as well as a view on each one;

Abramovich yet to cough off

BBC have reported that Abramovich is yet to pay out the £2.5bn promised for Ukraine after Roman Abramovich's sale of the football club back in 2022. US tycoon Todd Boehly of course took over and has since splashed his cash in transforming Chelsea's playing squad. Labour ministers are coming under increasing pressure to meet Abramovich's representatives and manage the funds with time ticking on, with pressure building.

Matthew Holt of football.london says: "Football and politics are often a tough one to marry together and given the ongoing controversy in Russia and the Ukraine, it is no surprise the sudden promise of funds has gone quiet. Whether that changes over the next few months looks unlikely."

Goalkeeper makes his feelings known

Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders has made it clear he has no intention of being a back-up at Stamford Bridge despite the Blues having a seriously extended goalkeeper department. Enzo Maresca has an awkward headache to solve and comments from the Express suggest another player is already keen to make his stance known. Penders is still with Genk yet will join up with Chelsea next season ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Matthew Holt of football.london says:"Maresca already has plenty to solve come the summer months, especially with the likes of Ben Chilwell, Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix all unsure what comes next at Stamford Bridge. Another goalkeeper will provide a headache for Robert Sanchez who has faced scrutiny in recent months."
