Why Chelsea will get Club World Cup trophy replica as Donald Trump reveals Gianni Infantino chat
by Bruna Reis · football.londonPresident Donald Trump has hinted that Chelsea may not receive the original Club World Cup trophy despite their victory in the tournament held in New Jersey on Sunday.
Enzo Maresca's team triumphed over PSG 3-0 in the final of the newly expanded Club World Cup at MetLife Stadium.
Cole Palmer netted twice and new recruit Joao Pedro added a third, securing a 3-0 win over the Champions League victors.
FIFA confirms that Chelsea can claim the title of world champions for four years and embellish their kits with a special badge.
The Blues amassed over £80million in prize money.
However, the trophy – a gold structure that moves and twists when a key is inserted into its rear – is likely to remain in the United States, according to President Trump, who attended the match on Sunday.
‘Have Club World Cup in Oval Office forever’
Speaking to Dazn, the occupant of the White House humorously suggested he could sign an executive order to change the name of the sport from soccer to football in the United States.
He then disclosed that he possesses the original Club World Cup trophy, as per the instructions of FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
"[Fifa] is doing fantastically well for [football in America], it's a growing sport, it is a great sport," President Trump told Dazn.
"They said: 'Could you hold this trophy for a little while?'.
"We put it in the Oval Office and then I asked: 'When are you going to pick up the trophy', and [Infantino] replied: 'We're never going to pick it up, you can have it forever in the Oval Office'.
"And they actually made a new one [for Chelsea] but right now [the original] is in the Oval."
FIFA's rapport with Trump has grown even cosier recently, as evidenced by football's governing body setting up shop in New York's Trump Tower last week, in preparation for the 2026 World Cup that the United States, Canada, and Mexico are set to co-host.
