Vincent Kompany is in hospital after collapsing during a Bayern Munich training session on Friday.

The Bayern boss has been struggling with a virus that left him in pain and having difficulty walking on the touchline in last weekend's victory over RB Leipzig.

Kompany insisted he was on the mend after the draw with Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday.

But, ahead of Sunday’s clash with Freiburg, things took a worrying turn during a reserve-team training session, which Kompany was watching when he collapsed.

Bayern released a statement on their website, saying "Vincent Kompany is currently undergoing a thorough examination in the hospital and will remain under medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage all training ‌and match-related operations."

Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, said: "Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. At Bayern, we will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery.

"Vinnie is receiving all the ‌necessary medical care and support, and he will be given as much time as he needs. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a quick recovery."

Kompany's former club Manchester City also sent their best wishes, with a post on their X feed reading: "Everyone at Manchester City is wishing a speedy recovery to our former captain and Club legend, Vincent Kompany.

"Get well soon, Vinny."
