Football fans have gathered in Tallaght to watch Cape Verde play Spain in their Group H World Cup opener in Atlanta as Robert 'Pico' Lopes plays for the island nation.

The Shamrock Rovers captain and Crumlin native has said this is the "stuff of dreams" and that he feels like he is "representing two countries" at the World Cup.

Pico Lopes is the only current League of Ireland player to play at a World Cup and a crowd is gathering to watch the momentous occasion at a watch party in the Priory Market in Tallaght.

Dozens of Shamrock Rovers fans were expected to support their captain as he plays for his father's home country.

Rovers' two trophies - the FAI cup and the League of Ireland cup - are in pride of place at the Priory Market. Maybe the trophies will bring a bit of luck for Cape Verde - known as the 'Blue Sharks' - as they take on Spain, one of the favourites to win the tournament.
