The NFL fined Skattebo $7,073 for his illegal use of the helmet during the Giants’ 27-21 win over the Texans on Sunday.
Out of the eight people fined for use-of-helmet infractions across the league in Week 7, Skattebo was the only one who was given a flag in real time, a move that the running back blasted the officials for.
Skattebo, 24, did not hold back when talking to reporters about the flag following Sunday’s win.
“But I will say, man, the NFL loves to post [about] me when I do stuff like that — but then also wants to take stuff from me,” he said, according to NJ.com. “I’m going to run the ball like I want to run the ball. And if I’m going to continue to get flagged for it or fined for it, man, I guess I’m going to play for free.
“I’m going to do what I can to be on this team, to give everything I’ve got. And if they’re going to punish me for that, then I’m just going to keep doing it and keep playing hard.”
Giants right guard Francis Mauigoa concurred that Skattebo was heated for the flag.
“[Skattebo] was pissed off when he got the personal foul,” he said. “It’s football. Play football. We’re not playing patty-cake.”
Despite the fine, officials typically do not call penalties for illegal use of the helmet, which prompted Skattebo’s response.
The seven other players who got fined but not flagged were: Steelers receiver Brandon Smith ($4,916); 49ers running back Jordan James ($6,194); Colts cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt ($7,791); Bears cornerback Clark Phillips ($11,550); Broncos safety Brandon Jones ($23,882); Lions safety Brian Branch ($23,882); and Broncos Alex Singleton ($47,662).
The fines increase in amount upon repeating the violations, with Singleton being fined for the second straight week.
