Terry Yorath tribute paid during Wrexham's FA Cup classic after Wales legend's death
by Amie Wilson · Wales OnlineWrexham paid a classy tribute to Wales legend Terry Yorath following his death this week during their dramatic FA Cup match with Nottingham Forest.
The Welsh club are fighting for a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup against Premier League side Nottingham Forest after seeing a two-goal lead cancelled out to be taken into extra time.
In the 75th minute of the match, Wrexham fans paid tribute to the former Wales player and manager as a picture of Yorath was displayed on the scoreboard.
Fans could also be heard singing "There's only one Terry Yorath." Yorath, the father of BBC TV presenter Gabby Logan, spent the majority of his playing career in England, but also played for Swansea before going on to manage them, as well as Cardiff and Wales, during his esteemed career. He also won 59 caps for the national team as a player.
As the applause started around the stadium, TNT sports commentator Darren Fletcher said: "The crowd inside the ground are paying their respects to the late, great Welshman, Terry Yorath."
Co-Commentator Ally McCoist added: "Brilliant, yeah. Heck of a man. Wonderful football player, great man."
Fletcher then said: "Great man as a player and as a manager. And our thoughts and condolences with the Yorath family at this time. And a lovely moment here inside the Racecourse ground with the Wrexham fans paying their respects. And I tell you something, Terry would've enjoyed it as much as anybody for these last 14 minutes we got here."
"He would've been loving this," MCoist said.
The game lived up to being a brilliant tribute to Yorath, turning into a classic FA Cup third-round clash.
Wrexham took the lead through Liberato Cacace in the 37th minute, with Oliver Rathbone doubling their advantage before the half-time whistle.
Forest, however, halved the deficit in the 64th minute through Igor Jesus.
But Dominic Hyam restored Wrexham's two-goal lead with just over 15 minutes left to play.
Forest started their comeback through Callum Hudson-Odoi just two minutes later. They drew level through the same player in the 90th minute.
That wasn't the last of the action before the full-time whistle, with chances coming and going for the Welsh side in added time.
In the end, the match ended in a 3-3 draw with extra time and possibly penalties needed to separate the two sides.
The extra half an hour couldn't separate the two teams, meaning that a penalty shootout was needed. It was Wrexham who came out on top with goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo the hero by saving penalties from Igor Jesus and Omari Hutchinson for the Welsh side to come out as 4-3 winners.
