Jack Grealish returns to the starting line-up after overcoming illness to make Everton’s first XI against Brentford. The playmaker missed the trip to Burnley and then was named on the bench at Nottingham Forest in midweek – with David Moyes conceding that, had he any alternative, he would not have involved the 30-year-old at the City Ground.
He is one of two key players to return to Moyes’ side, with Michael Keane deemed fit after his own injury struggle over Christmas. Keane makes an immediate return, one that will push Jake O’Brien back to right back despite his dominant performance in his favoured position in the 2-0 win over Forest in midweek.
O’Brien, therefore, takes the place of Nathan Patterson after the Scotland defender made his first Premier League start of the season on Tuesday.
Moyes was pleased with Patterson but had to withdraw him after an hour, as he started to cramp on what was his return to first-team football after a season blighted by injury problems.
Grealish, meanwhile, replaces Merlin Rohl, meaning he will partner Dwight McNeil and Tyler Dibling in an attacking midfield that will line-up behind Thierno Barry, who scored his second goal of his Everton career at Forest.
Starting line-up: Pickford; Mykolenko, Keane, Tarkowski, O'Brien; Garner, Iroegbunam; Grealish, McNeil, Dibling; Barry.
Subs: Travers, King, Patterson, Beto, Rohl, Aznou, Armstrong, Welch, Campbell.
Brentford XI: Kelleher, Hickey, Ajer, Collins, Schade, Jensen, Thiago, Damsgaard, Yarmoliuk, Janelt, Kayode.
Subs: Valdimarsson, Henry, Van Den Berg, Pinnock, Nelson, Henderson, Lewis-Potter, Peart-Harris, Donovan
