Spurs say former Sacramento Kings star De’Aaron Fox will undergo season-ending surgery
by Jason Anderson · The Fresno BeeFormer Sacramento Kings star De’Aaron Fox will undergo season-ending surgery next week to repair a pinkie injury that has plagued him for months.
The San Antonio Spurs announced Fox is scheduled to have surgery Tuesday in Los Angeles to repair a tendon injury to his left pinkie finger. Fox has played through the injury all season after damaging the finger during training camp.
Fox, 27, spent nearly eight seasons in Sacramento after coming out of Kentucky as the No. 5 pick in the 2017 NBA draft. The Kings traded him to the Spurs ahead of the February trade deadline in a three-team deal that brought Zach LaVine to Sacramento while sending Kevin Huerter to the Chicago Bulls.
Fox appeared in 62 games this season, averaging 23.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting 46.3% from the field and 31% from 3-point range. He played 17 games for the Spurs, scoring 19.7 points per game on 44.6% shooting from the field and 27.4% shooting from beyond the arc.
The Spurs are already missing star center Victor Wembanyama, who was shut down in February after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.
Fox led the Kings to the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference in 2022-23, ending the longest playoff drought in NBA history after 16 consecutive losing seasons in Sacramento. He was chosen as an All-Star and All-NBA Third Team selection for the first time in his career. He was also named the inaugural winner of the Jerry West Clutch Player of the Year award.
