Dec. 19 (UPI) -- United States Men's National Team midfielder Tyler Adams sustained a knee injury and will miss up to three months, Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola announced Friday.

Adams tore the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during Bournemouth's 4-4 draw with Manchester United on Monday in Manchester, England.

"Tyler is injured and has torn his MCL, so he will definitely be out for some time," Iraola said. "From our previous experience with MCL injuries, it is normally around two or three months.

"It's a big blow because he is an important player for us. Straight away, when you see the mechanism of the injury and the action itself, we felt it could be something serious."

Adams, 26, joined Bournemouth in 2023. He previously spent time with Leeds United, RB Leipzig and the New York Red Bulls. He totaled two goals and one assists over 15 starts this season in Premier League play.

The Cherries (5-5-6) sit in 13th place in the Premier League standings.

"Tyler is very valuable for us and very unique in what he does," Iraola said. "We do have options -- Alex has been playing there and Lewis Cook is in his natural position there -- but it's true that Tyler is difficult to replace."

Adams, who made 52 appearances for the U.S. senior team, was removed from the roster in November after a collision with Bournemouth teammate Adam Smith. He was a captain for the Americans at the 2022 World Cup.

The final U.S. roster for the 2026 World Cup is expected to be announced in May. The Americans will face Paraguay in their Group D opener June 12 in Inglewood, Calif.
