Wayne Rooney tipped for new job after Birmingham City and Plymouth disasters
by Alex Dicken, https://www.facebook.com/alexdickenjournalist/?fref=ts · Birmingham LiveWayne Rooney has been given odds of 8/13 to become a Match of the Day pundit after his managerial mishaps at Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle.
Rooney was sacked by Blues 12 months ago following a wretched 15-game run which saw the club lose nine times and drop from sixth to 20th in the Championship. Blues were later relegated to League One but Chris Davies has them on course for an immediate return to the second tier.
Plymouth, who stayed up at Blues’ expense, handed Rooney a Championship lifeline in the summer before parting ways with the Manchester United and England legend at the end of December. The Pilgrims were rooted to the foot of the Championship table under Rooney and their fortunes haven’t improved in the past month.
Rooney has suggested he would like another crack at coaching, but it remains to be seen whether another club will take a punt on the 39-year-old. A route into punditry seems a possibility after Rooney was part of the BBC's coverage of the European Championships last summer.
Casinos.com oddsmaker James Leyfield commented: "Rooney is priced at just 8/13 to sign a deal with Match of the Day, which could be part of a shake-up for the show. With Gary Lineker set to step down at the end of the season, the BBC has confirmed that Gabby Logan, Mark Chapman, and Kelly Cates will share presenting duties moving forward.
"If Rooney doesn’t join the MOTD lineup, he has plenty of other suitors. According to reports, multiple broadcasters are keen to bring him in as an analyst. Sky Sports leads the race at 11/10, where he could reunite with former teammates Gary Neville or Roy Keane. Meanwhile, ITV Football (15/8) is another possibility, where he could team up with Ian Wright.”
