by John Townley, https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/authors/john-townley/ · Birmingham LiveAston Villa have secured their passage to the fourth round of the FA Cup by beating West Ham 2-1 at Villa Park.
Lucas Paqueta opened the scoring early in the first half after being picked out by Crysencio Summerville, before Amadou Onana levelled up in the 71st minute. Morgan Rogers then completed the comeback with 15 minutes to play by turning in Ollie Watkins' ball across the box.
Having lost seven consecutive FA Cup third round matches between 2016-17 and 2022-23, Villa have now reached the fourth round in consecutive campaigns for the first time since 2014-15/2015-16.

West Ham lost their striker Niclas Fullkrug through a hamstring injury in the 14th minute and he was replaced by Danny Ings. The former Villa forward had a shot blocked in the box by Matty Cash shortly after coming on.
Ross Barkley then came off injured for Villa in the 23rd minute after suffering an injury in a first half where Villa failed to register a single shot. Their best chance of the half came when Leon Bailey rolled the ball across the box in the 42nd minute, but Watkins wasn’t in the right place at the right time.
Emi Martinez was not included in the matchday squad because he suffered a small injury before the match. After being assessed on Friday morning, Unai Emery opted not to take a risk on the goalkeeper and started Robin Olsen instead.
Sluggish for an hour, Villa then turned it on and Onana equalised by tapping in from close range after the away side failed to deal with a corner.
Rogers then put Villa in front in the 75th minute by converting from inside the box after being picked out by Watkins. Jacob Ramsey nearly bagged a third for Villa when he smacked the post not long after the hosts went ahead.
Villa are next in action against Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday night (7:30pm) before they travel to Arsenal on the Saturday (5:30pm kick-off).
Player ratings
Robin Olsen
Olsen made his first start of the season tonight as Martinez was not included in the squad due to a small injury. After conceding, Olsen only faced one more shot on target. 6
Matty Cash
Cash made a strong block to deny Ings a shot on target in the 18th minute after the former Villa man was picked out by Mohammed Kudus. Villa's right-back showed good energy and always wanted to play forward. 7
Ezri Konsa
Konsa played three accurate long balls, nine passed into the final third, recorded a passing accuracy of 97 per cent and also made five recoveries. 7
Tyrone Mings
Mings showed a good turn of pace to track back when West Ham looked to play in behind. It was another strong showing from the centre-back, who has needed little time to get back up to speed. 7
Ian Maatsen
Maatsen made his first start since the win over Southampton. He tracked back well when West Ham looked to counter, but didn't have much joy attacking in the first half because Summerville operated like a wing-back out of possession. 7
Boubacar Kamara
Kamara, as ever, competed well in midfield. To West Ham's credit, they also battled well. He was replaced after Onana's equaliser. 7
Ross Barkley
Barkley picked up an injury in the 20th minute and was replaced by Onana. N/A
Leon Bailey
Bailey came into the match on the back of opening his account for the season by scoring the winning goal against Leicester. He slipped the ball into the corridor of uncertainty just before half-time, but Watkins wasn't there to finish. 6
Youri Tielemans
Tielemans tried to make things happen, but couldn't get the weight of his pass right when it mattered. He was bumped off the ball and struggled to get going for the first 60 minutes of the match. He's one of a few Villa players who've set themselves high standards with his previous performances this season. 6
Morgan Rogers
Rogers never goes hiding on the pitch even if his final ball is lacking sometimes. He lost the ball to Kudus in the 15th minute, which resulted in a decent chance for Ings, but his shot was blocked by Cash inside the box. He's incredibly difficult to stop when he goes through the gears with the ball at his feet. Made an important block to deny Vladimir Coufal late on. Match-winner. 7
Ollie Watkins
Watkins hardly had a kick in the first half, registering only four touches. He would've been kicking himself for not gambling in the 42nd minute when Bailey poked the ball across the box. He improved in the second half and grabbed an assist. 6
SUBS
Amadou Onana (for Barkley, 23'): Onana matched up well with the West Ham midfielders Soucek and Alvarez. Scored the all-important equalising goal. 7
Jacob Ramsey (for Bailey 72'): He crashed the ball off the post with a great strike from the edge of the box. 6
Kosta Nedeljkovic (for Cash, 72'): The young right-back showed his rapid pace on a couple of occasions and made a strong block to deny Ollie Scarles. 6
Emi Buendia (for Kamara, 72'): Buendia got stuck in after coming on. Made a good impact in Villa's last two games. 6
Subs not used: Gauci, Digne, Bogarde, Jimoh-Aloba, Burrowes.
GOALS
Aston Villa: Onana (71'), Rogers (76')
West Ham: Paqueta (9')
