Unai Emery responds to Diego Carlos speculation after Milan Skriniar transfer twist
by John Townley, https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/authors/john-townley/ · Birmingham LiveAston Villa manager Unai Emery has responded to speculation surrounding Diego Carlos, who is a target for Fenerbahce this month.
The Turkish giants are said to be in negotiations with Villa regarding a permanent transfer for Carlos, with some reports claiming that those talks are now at an advanced stage. After being made available for transfer last summer, the centre-back could depart in this window, but only if Villa can source a replacement.
Carlos is currently injured and will miss Villa's FA Cup third round clash against West Ham after he was also absent from the win over Leicester City last weekend. Pau Torres, meanwhile, is expected to be sidelined for another six weeks after breaking a metatarsal in his right foot.

Last week, Emery was asked about Carlos and his stance on a possible sale, but he spoke of the defender's importance in the side considering the lack of options in that department of his squad. But given that Fenerbahce are keen to sign him this month, Emery was asked about the current situation in his press conference on Friday.
"When we are in the transfer window different options can happen with the players," Emery explained. "Of course we can see how important Diego Carlos was and is for us because he played consistently with us, performing very well.
"Of course, like I told you before, we are thinking in different circumstances but always trying to link and get what is best for the club, for the team and for each player. After those circumstances we will analyse and always try to make the best decision."
Villa have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Milan Skriniar on loan until the end of the season, but it appears that he could be heading to Napoli instead, while Galatasaray are also chasing his signature.
Paris Saint-Germain are said to have offered Skriniar to Napoli as part of a deal involving winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and talks could progress. Villa will not sanction a move for Carlos without having a replacement lined up.
