Man United could turn to Aston Villa transfer target as Emi Martinez alternative
by Joseph Chapman, https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/authors/joseph-chapman/ · Birmingham LiveManchester United could turn their attentions elsewhere in their hunt for a new goalkeeper after being rebuffed by Aston Villa with a bizarre loan bid for number one Emiliano Martinez - and they could look to a player who the Lions themselves have been linked with.
United are keen on another keeper, Fabrizio Romano reports, although they're uncertain on the profile of stopper they're looking for - a senior keeper could be recruited to replace existing number one Andre Onana, or a younger keeper might be sought to work alongside the Red Devils' first choice.
One keeper who Villa have also been credited with an interest in is young Belgian Senne Lammens, who plays for Pro League side Royal Antwerp.
Lammens, 23, enjoyed a breakthrough last season; he played 44 times and kept 10 clean sheets in all competitions, while also being called up to the Belgium squad for their UEFA Nations League campaign and World Cup qualifiers. He has two years remaining on his current contract and is valued by Transfermarkt at £9m.
For United, Lammens is 'one of the main names' on their list of potential targets this summer, an alternative to Martinez and an alternative to Onana.
Villa have already bid farewell to Robin Olsen after three and a half years acting as Martinez's back-up goalkeeper; the Swede has returned to his boyhood club Malmo on a free transfer after his contract at Villa expired. They have signed Marco Bizot from Brest as a replacement.
