Andy Murray makes shock return to tennis as he takes up new role with Novak Djokovic
by Scott Trotter, Keith Wales, https://www.facebook.com/ScottTrotterjournalist · Birmingham LiveIn a surprising twist to his illustrious career, British tennis icon Andy Murray is set to coach Novak Djokovic, the Serbian star has confirmed. The shock move comes after Murray hung up his racket earlier this year, ending a playing career that boasted Wimbledon victories and Olympic gold.
Djokovic, 37, who arguably curtailed Murray's chances of further triumphs, shared a video on social media to announce the news. "He never liked retirement anyway," Djokovic quipped.
The video featured a montage of memorable moments between the two athletes, with Djokovic narrating his latest team addition: "We played each other since we were boys," he reflected. "Twenty-five years of being rivals, of pushing each other beyond our limits. We had some of the most epic battles in our sport. They called us gamechangers, risk-takers, history-makers. I thought our story may be over. Turns out it has one final chapter. It's time for one of my toughest opponents to step into my corner. Welcome on board coach Andy Murray."
Murray also confirmed his new role, expressing his enthusiasm: "I'm going to be joining Novak's team in the off season, helping him to prepare for the Australian Open," he stated. "I'm really excited for it and looking forward to spending time on the same side of the net as Novak for a change, helping him to achieve his goals".
Djokovic expressed his own excitement about the collaboration: "I am excited to have one of my greatest rivals on the same side of the net, as my Coach," he said, according to the Mirror.
"Looking forward to start of the season and competing in Australia alongside Andy with whom I have shared many exceptional moments on the Australian soil."
