Where England and Spain find themselves
The World Cup has framed the match perfectly: on one side, England reached the semi-finals before a late collapse saw them defeated 2-1 by Argentina.
The Three Lions bounced back to defeat France in the bronze medal playoff, marking their best finish since winning the tournament way back in 1966.
Spain, meanwhile, were patient all the way to the final, where they avenged England by sinking Argentina with a Ferran Torres goal in extra time.
Despite a goalless draw to Cape Verde in the group stages, La Roja remained unbeaten, even against France and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.
Spain boosted their credentials by becoming two-time world champions, adding to their triumphs in Euro 2024 and the Nations League in 2022/23.
Thomas Tuchel’s England needs to approach this game carefully, considering Luis de la Fuente’s team were runners-up in the previous edition.

Tuchel has named a 27-man squad, with Trent Alexander-Arnold (Real Madrid) among the headline recalls – he last featured for his country in 2025.
However, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, and Declan Rice have since withdrawn, with James Garner and Morgan Gibbs-White now in the mix.

With no fresh injury concerns, his team could be seen as full-strength, with Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal said to be fully recovered.
Spain’s manager has solid options for all positions on the field, showcasing the national team’s fearsome depth and sheer level of talent.

England have won four out of their last five matches.
At the World Cup, their sole defeat was the 1-2 semi-final clash against Argentina. Around this was their 6-4 win over France, a 2-1 victory against Norway, a 3-2 success versus co-hosts Mexico, and a 2-1 win to sink DR Congo.
Spain, meanwhile, have a flawless record in their last five outings. In addition to their 1-0 win to dethrone Argentina as world champions, they also beat France comprehensively in the semi-finals (2-0).
Earlier in the knockout stages, they also defeated Belgium 2-1, accounted for Portugal 0-1, and thumped Austria 3-0.
England and Spain have a mixed history in head-to-head matches: last time out, La Roja defeated the Three Lions 2-1 in Euro 2024 en route to the title. During the 2018 Nations League, a 2-1 win for Spain was balanced against a 3-2 win for England.
Looking at other meetings, Spain won a friendly in 2015 with a solid 2-0 scoreline, and they then played to a draw in another friendly a year later.
Match prediction
On paper, this is the reigning world champs against a team reeling from another World Cup campaign falling short. Head-to-head statistics and current titles give Spain the edge, even with England having the home advantage.
It’s hard to bet against de la Fuente’s team, who proved that being tactically patient is the perfect counter-strategy. However, Wembley Stadium and a packed English fanbase could make the result narrower than one might assume.
The likely result is a one-goal win to get Spain’s Nations League campaign off to the ideal start away from home. The reverse fixture takes place in November, with England travelling to the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.
While Saturday’s match has high stakes, the clash later this year could actually determine who tops the group.
