Zulu explains his Pirates heroics, responds to positive feedback

Orlando Pirates’ newly signed defender Sbangani Zulu has opened up about his heroic start at the club, where he has put his hand up as a solid option in the left centre-back position. 

Zulu arrived as somewhat of an under-the-radar signing from Richards Bay FC in the off-season, overshadowed by high-profile arrivals like Ghampani Lungu, Mthetheleli Mthiyane, and Bohale Ngwato.

Despite the quiet nature of his transfer and the undisclosed contract details, he made an immediate impact during his official debut against Durban City FC in the MTN8 quarter-finals at home on 8 August.

He has since become an instant fan-favourite among the Ghost, who can be heard loudly chanting his name in the stands every time he touches the ball.

The excitement surrounding the versatile youngster reached fever pitch during the recent 4-0 thrashing of Kruger United in a league match at Mbombela Stadium.

Reflecting on his moment of bravery 

With goalkeeper Sipho Chaine already beaten, Zulu produced a sensational, goal-bound clearance off the line to protect his team's clean sheet and secure the Man of the Match accolade.

"I'm very happy to be the Man of the Match because it's the first time I've received a Man of the Match award," Zulu told the club's media.

"In that situation, they were angling for a cross. I saw that Sipho had the first post covered, so I decided to go cover the far post, which was open.

"It happened that they headed the ball towards the far post, and fortunately I was already there.

"I have to say a big thank you to the supporters. Since I have been in the team, they have shown me more support than I have ever received.

Zulu's steep challenge at Pirates

"Even when I play, you can hear them chanting, 'Zuuuuulu'. So, the way they support me encourages me and makes me fearless," he added.

Despite his early heroics, the defender acknowledged that he still faces stiff competition to nail down a permanent starting spot in the line-up with Nkosinathi Sibisi and Mpho Chabatsane among those in the reckoning.
