Hunt on Msimango: I should have protected him...

Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt has delivered his assessment of new signing Given Msimango.

The commanding defender completed a high-profile move from Kaizer Chiefs in August 2026.

He joined the Cape Winelands outfit via a multi-player swap deal involving Langelihle Phili. However, a severe lack of match fitness forced him to watch their opening fixtures from the sidelines. This included missing a dramatic 3-3 draw against Polokwane City.

The former Amakhosi centre-back finally made his official debut on Tuesday. Stellies played out a goalless 0-0 draw against Durban City FC at Chatsworth Stadium.

What Hunt said about Msimango

Hunt praised the defender's application but raised serious concerns over his conditioning. "He did well, I believe he was good, he'll be good for us," Hunt said after the match.

"But obviously he hasn't been fit. He came here very unfit. I should have protected him in the last 20 minutes, which I did."

What's next for Stellies?

Stellies now turn their attention to Sekhukhune United on 11 September 2026. Hunt's troops have endured a slow domestic start.

They have collected just one win from five matches. A victory against Babina Noko is now absolutely crucial. Maximum points will propel the Western Cape side up the Betway Premiership log table. It will immediately stabilise their campaign.
