In a game that saw a little bit of everything and lasted more than four hours, UNLV’s football team defeated Cal 39-31 on Saturday at Allegiant Stadium.

UNLV (3-2) all but clinched things when quarterback Jackson Arnold scored from 2 yards out with 3:25 remaining and pushed the Rebels ahead 39-25.

It culminated a UNLV rally that saw the Rebels lose all of a 17-point halftime lead before coming back for the victory.

Arnold rushed for 110 yards and two scores while throwing for 158 and three more.

Cal outscored UNLV 11-0 in the third quarter, pulling within 24-18 entering the fourth quarter.

The Golden Bears (2-3) were good on a wheel route for a 55-yard score and then took advantage of a UNLV fumble on the ensuing kickoff, cashing in for a field goal and three more points. Cal then took the lead at 25-24 on a 7-yard scoring run with 11:35 remaining.

UNLV would then score the game’s next two touchdowns and put things out of reach.

UNLV held a 24-7 halftime advantage because of some of those explosive plays coach Dan Mullen talks about frequently. The Rebels earned touchdowns of 70, 55 and 36 yards over the opening 30 minutes.

Cal had its own big play, a 91-yard scoring pass that gave the Golden Bears a 7-0 lead.

But the Rebels defense wouldn’t allow much thereafter before intermission, bending but not breaking against heralded Cal quarterback Jaron-Keawe-Sagapolutele. He completed 19 of 27 passes for 195 yards with the long scoring pass before getting injured late in the second quarter and not returning.
