Arbor View holds off Bishop Gorman in opening round of 5A softball playoffs

Madilyn Lowy went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and two RBIs Monday, and second-seeded Arbor View overcame an early two-run deficit to beat seventh-seeded Bishop Gorman 5-2 in opening-round play of the 5A Southern League softball playoffs at Arbor View.

Peyton Williams also homered for the Aggies, and pitcher Audrey Melton shut the Gaels down after giving up two runs in the first inning.

The Aggies host Shadow Ridge in a winners bracket quarterfinal Tuesday at 4 p.m. Gorman plays at Green Valley at 4 p.m. Tuesday in an elimination game.

No. 3 Shadow Ridge 15, No. 6 Green Valley 10: At Shadow Ridge, Rosely Hensley-Mokiao went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs as the Mustangs erased a three-run deficit with a 10-run fourth inning to beat the Gators.

Davaeh Crawford, Madelynn Quidato and Loa Duarte had three hits apiece to help Shadow Ridge.

No. 5 Coronado 23, No. 4 Centennial 6: At Centennial, Bailey Goldberg had two home runs and six RBIs, and the Cougars erupted for 10 runs in the second inning on their way to a five-inning win over the Bulldogs.

Caleigh Burns also knocked in six runs for Coronado with a 4-for-5 performance that included a double. Teammate Camila Carmona helped out with two doubles and four RBIs.

The Cougars play Palo Verde in the quarterfinals Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Durango. Centennial hosts Liberty at 4 p.m. Tuesday in an elimination game.

No. 1 Palo Verde 13, No. 8 Liberty 3: At Durango, Ava Koenig had a home run, two doubles and four RBIs, and was the winning pitcher in the Panthers’ victory over the Patriots.

Taylor Johns added a home run, a double and two RBIs for Palo Verde, and teammate Haley Kearns went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Class 4A state playoffs

No. 1D Sky Pointe 3, No. 4L Tech 1: At Sky Pointe, Brad Rappleye collected 16 kills, three blocks and two service aces as the Eagles recovered from a first-set loss to defeat Tech 19-25, 25-10, 25-18, 25-12.

Makai Kelley added 36 assists and 10 digs to help Sky Pointe, which hosts Sunrise Mountain in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

No. 3S Sunrise Mountain 3, No. 2M Bishop Gorman 0: At Bishop Gorman, the Miners posted a 25-20, 25-22, 29-27 first-round victory over the Gaels.

No. 1S Mojave 3, No. 4M Durango 0: At Mojave, the Rattlers opened with a 25-15, 25-21, 25-7 win over the Trailblazers.

Mojave hosts Del Sol at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

No. 2L Del Sol 3, No. 3D Legacy 0: At Del Sol, the Dragons had little trouble defeating the Longhorns 25-15, 25-15, 26-24.

No. 1M Desert Oasis 3, No. 4S Losee 0: At Desert Oasis, Jaiden Alarcon recorded 16 assists and three aces to help the Diamondbacks roll to a 25-7, 25-12, 25-16 win over the Lions.

Silas Navar added 10 assists and two aces for Desert Oasis, which hosts Cimarron at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

No. 2D Cimarron-Memorial 3, No. 3L Silverado 1: At Cimarron, Byron Nguyen finished with 19 kills in the Spartans’ 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-21 win over the Skyhawks.

Marcus Riley added 13 kills for Cimarron.

No. 1L Liberty 3, No. 4D Rancho 0: At Liberty, Zee Chavis racked up 37 assists, six kills and three aces to help the Patriots roll past Rancho 25-14, 25-15, 25-22.

Jordan Valdez and Adam Staples each added nine kills for Liberty, which hosts Las Vegas at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

No. 2S Las Vegas 3, No. 3M Bonanza 0: At Las Vegas, Max Lindaman had 19 kills, 12 digs and two aces to help the Wildcats cruise past Bonanza 25-14, 25-21, 25-22.

Mikelle Reyes added 14 digs and eight kills for Las Vegas.
