'Big future' - Derby County prospect wins praise after transfer confirmed
by Leigh Curtis · Derbyshire LiveWorcester City boss Chris Cornes believes young Derby County goalkeeper Jack Thompson has a bright future after answering their SOS in midweek.
Thompson has joined the club on an initial 28-day loan due to an injury to Haydn Whitcombe, who has suffered a fractured finger.
He got off to a fine start, too, as he helped City secure a 1-1 draw against Banbury, leaving Cornes impressed.
"He was absolutely fantastic," the manager said. "You can see why he is where he is. He was brilliant.
"Coming in, meeting the lads and then going and doing what he’s done – he was fantastic.
"His kicking was good, he's confident, he's talking, what more do you want?
"He does it day in, day out. Does it with the best coaches at the level he’s at. He has got a bright future and he’s done brilliantly for us.
"I thought he was fantastic. We will continue through this loan and see where it goes from there."
Derby have high hopes for Thompson, who has been with the Rams since the age of eight and has been capped by England at youth level.
He was named the academy player of the season for 2022/23. In December 2023, he signed his first professional contract with the club, which will keep him with the Rams until the summer of 2026.
He received his first England Under-18s call-up in early 2024 to round off a brilliant individual season, during which he also trained with the first team.
