Former USA striker responds to Patrick Agyemang transfer question as Derby County chase deal
by Leigh Curtis · Derbyshire LiveFormer USA international Charlie Davies says he likes the prospect of Patrick Agyemang moving to the Championship and says it will benefit the forward's chances of making the World Cup squad next year.
After landing Carlton Morris from Luton Town, Derby County are hoping to wrap up a deal for the Charlotte FC striker, who is currently away with the US national team for the Gold Cup.
Agyemang's future has sparked plenty of debate across the Atlantic with the 24-year-old having also said to have attracted the interest of Ipswich Town.
With a World Cup looming next year and Agyemang hoping to be part of the US squad, pundits and former players have been debating whether it would be best to move to the UK or stay in the MLS.
But Davies, who played in Europe himself, believes a switch to England would only benefit the player's education, but the level of competition in the second tier would enhance his World Cup prospects.
"I do like the move in the sense that he's going to Europe, playing a lot of games, and getting those matches. The intensity and pressure will mount, obviously," he told the CBS Golazo show.
"It's a choice for Patrick Agyemang to stay at Charlotte or go to the Championship, a division where they're probably going to have to pay a significant fee to bring him over.
"He's going to be counted on to play week in and week out in the Championship and a lot of matches.
"We talked about him still developing and he's got a lot of room to grow.
"I like the move.
"Now, is this the best move in football history for Patrick Agyemang? No, but it's a step up from what he's playing in with Charlotte.
"I love the pressure.
"I think that the competition will benefit him and benefit his chances of making the World Cup roster for 2026.
