Former Derby County boss Wayne Rooney has expressed his surprise at the Football Association's decision to appoint Thomas Tuchel as England's new manager.

Tuchel, who will take over from interim manager Lee Carsley after the National League matches against Greece and the Republic Of Ireland, is set to replace Gareth Southgate.

The move has left former England captain Rooney somewhat taken aback. He said: "I think he's [Tuchel] a very good coach, but surprised the FA have employed him."

Rooney went on to praise the FA's development of young coaches, adding: "What the FA have built - and I was part of that and have seen first hand what they've built over the last 10, 15 years - it's been great," and "It's been a great platform for young coaches coming through, so I'm surprised they haven't gone in with one of their own."

Despite his surprise, Rooney wished Tuchel well, concluding: "But they've made the decision and I wish him all the best, and I hope he does well for us.."
