Derby County face 'massive pressure' as Widell Zetterstrom and Mendez-Laing add to problems
by James Pallatt · Derbyshire LiveDerby County are now under “massive pressure” as they fight to stay in the Championship, says former striker Malcolm Christie.
The Rams’ survival hopes were dealt a huge blow as they lost 1-0 to relegation rivals Luton Town at Pride Park on Good Friday.
John Eustace’s side conceded an early goal as Millenic Alli struck for the Hatters and to add to Derby’s problems first-choice goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom missed the match and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing went off injured in the first half.
The Rams are now only above the drop zone on goal difference in 21st place, with Luton now level on points with them in 22nd spot.
“We fell short, and if I'm honest, I didn't expect to be sitting here looking at the Luton fans celebrating,” said Christie on BBC Radio Derby.
“They have played us at our own game, they defended magnificently. The three centre halves for Luton were outstanding.
“They scored a very Derby-like goal, and we just weren't at the races in the first half; it heaps massive pressure on the next two games now.”
They have just three matches left to play, against West Brom, Hull City and Stoke City.
