John Eustace in Patrick Agyemang vow as he faces Derby County decision

John Eustace says Derby County have a responsibility to protect Patrick Agyemang as the exciting forward improves his fitness.

Agyemang impressed after coming off the bench for his Derby debut last weekend as he teed up Andi Weimann to secure a 1-0 win at West Brom.

It was the striker's first game since returning from a double hernia op following a hectic summer in which he played for the USA in the Gold Cup.

Agyemang got another 60 minutes earlier in the week in a behind-closed-doors friendly as he continues to build up his fitness.

Eustace was asked if the forward was in a position to start, given his impact off the bench last weekend, but Derby's head coach is remaining cautious.

"We have to look at it," he said. "Obviously he's had the six weeks out and he's been training for two weeks now.

"He's managed to get some really good minutes, and he got another 60 in the week, so he's progressing nicely.

"It's important we don't push him too quickly.

"He's still had a few issues in his groin area, so we have to protect him, and we don't want him to break down, so we'll see if he's available to start on Saturday.

"If not, I'm sure he'll make an impact like he did on Saturday."

Agyemang was excellent when he came on last weekend and Eustace added: "We have to speak to the the medical department and get their expertise and speak to the coaches as well.

"But you also have to remember we've got a couple of strikers there who they've been doing well.

"We've got Carlton, we've got Andy Weimann who came on and scored as well.

"It's not just about the individual, it's about doing what's right for the team first and foremost.

"Patrick might start on Saturday, let's wait and see."
