Former Mariners pitcher, Seattle native Mike Campbell dies at 61
by Seattle Times staff · The Seattle TimesFormer Mariners pitcher Mike Campbell, a West Seattle native who graduated from Newport High School in Bellevue, died on Monday. He was 61.
“The Mariners were saddened to learn today of the passing of Seattle-native Mike Campbell,” the team said in a statement. “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family, including siblings Erin, Gillian, Matt, and Tim.”
Campbell was drafted by the Mariners with the seventh-overall pick in the 1985 MLB draft.
The right-hander made his major-league debut in 1987 and pitched with the Mariners during parts of the 1987, ’88 and ’89 seasons before being traded to the Montreal Expos as part of the deal in which Seattle acquired Hall of Famer Randy Johnson.
Campbell had a 13-year professional career, including appearing in the majors with Seattle, Texas, San Diego and the Chicago Cubs.
In 51 career games, including 41 starts, Campbell compiled a 12-19 record with a 5.86 ERA, 135 strikeouts, 95 walks and three complete games over 233 1/3 innings pitched.
No cause was given for his death.
