In the extended warning, the national forecaster states: “Extremely cold with widespread severe frost and ice, along with lying snow in some areas. Patches of freezing fog also.
“Impacts: Dangerous travelling conditions on roads and underfoot, travel disruption and delays, animal welfare issues and poor visibility”.
The extension is valid from 9PM on Thursday the 9th of January, until 8AM on Friday the 10th of January.
Moving into next week, the weather is due to improve with temperatures coming up, making way for drizzly weather.
Both Met Eireann and WX Charts say their weather models for Ireland show a much milder week.
"Current indications are for high pressure to develop to the southeast of the country but a few frontal systems will clip western and northern counties too.," said the national forecaster.
"Overall rather mixed with cloud and drizzle along Atlantic coastal fringes but drier and perhaps sunnier in the southeast."
