A good stain remover — especially one you can take with you on the go — is a must. I learned this the hard way last weekend, when I was out to dinner with friends and managed to spill guacamole on the front of my favorite dress. (The green stain is still not totally gone, even after a turn in the washing machine, and I’m a little brokenhearted about it.) But if my fellow shoppers on the Internet are to be believed, I should have been armed with a bottle of Dreft laundry stain remover.

Dreft has been around for over 90 years, debuting in 1933 with the first synthetic detergent in the United States. Now, the old-school brand primarily sells products marketed toward parents looking for gentle, baby-safe cleaning and laundry products. That includes their stain remover spray. But even if you don’t have a little one making messes around the house, it seems like this spray is a winner for any and all stains on clothing, bedding, blankets and more.
“I’ve had poop, blood, and spit-up on clothes and the stain remover got it out, even on set-in stains,” one reviewer raved. “A friend told me it even got red wine out of a white shirt!” Others mentioned putting the spray to work on coffee and juice stains, rust stains from irons, mac and cheese stains and more.
And, since it’s designed for use on baby clothes, the formula is gentle and hypoallergenic. It’s completely plant-based and free of dyes, phosphates and parabens. Reviewers say the smell is mild and not chemical, unlike some harsher stain removers, and that it doesn’t fade fabric colors.

You can buy the spray in a two-pack of travel-size bottles (3 ounces each) at Amazon, or go for a bigger 24-ounce bottle at Walmart. The 24-ounce bottle is priced under $5 at Walmart, which is pretty incredible bang for your buck, but even the travel-size multipack gets you 6 ounces of spray for $9. (Miss Mouth’s Messy Eater Stain Treater, a comparable and more popular stain remover spray, typically costs about that much for 4 ounces, for context.)
Dreft’s spray also has customers coming back year after year, calling it a “godsend.” “I was gifted this when I was pregnant with my first kid and then I’ve been buying them ever since (5+ years), for all stains,” said one reviewer, who also shared that they keep the spray on subscription.
