Storm Eowyn officially named as Ireland to be battered by gale-force winds and heavy rain
by Darragh Murphy · Irish MirrorThe first storm of 2025 has officially been named by the Met Office, with Ireland and the UK set to be battered by strong winds and heavy rain in the coming days.
A month after Storm Darragh wreaked havoc in many parts of the country, Storm Eowyn is expected to result in multiple weather warnings in Ireland as a deepening low pressure system tracks close to the country.
The south of the island could be the worst affected as current models suggest the centre of the storm will bring severe gusts to that region.
While no weather warnings have yet been issued by Met Eireann, our national forecaster has acknowledged the naming of Storm Eowyn and has advised the public to keep up to date with all weather updates as conditions turn unsettled later this week.
A weather advisory has been put in place by Met Eireann up to midnight on Saturday night as the potential for damaging conditions looms.
A spokesperson for Met Eireann said: "On Thursday night and during Friday, a deepening Low-Pressure system is forecast to track close to Ireland. Very strong winds are likely across the country with the potential for damaging wind gusts and disruption in places. High seas and spells of heavy rain are expected also.
"Met Éireann is continuously monitoring the evolving situation and weather warnings will be issued as confidence in the forecast track/intensity of the Low-Pressure system improves.
"Please check the met.ie website and app for updates to forecasts and warnings in the coming days."
