Razer releases new Thunderbolt 5 Dock Chroma with RGB and built-in M.2 NVMe SSD support

Thunderbolt docks are no oddity among Mac users, but there are select OEMs that incorporate Thunderbolt connectivity into even Windows-based notebooks, which makes them an important tool even for select PC users. That’s why a new release by gaming PC and accessory maker Razer might turn some heads in both camps.

Razer, like Apple, uses Thunderbolt connectivity in its laptop computers, but mostly for different reasons than Apple does on Macs. While Apple’s focus is on multi-display support for productivity and connecting lots of peripherals and accessories, Razer has often lauded Thunderbolt connectivity for eGPU support, allowing even lower-end notebooks to game with higher-end graphics cards.

Today, Razer unveiled a new product – the Thunderbolt 5 Dock Chroma – which is exactly what it sounds like… a Thunderbolt 5 Dock that comes standard with Razer’s proprietary Chroma RGB lighting effects.

Razer’s Thunderbolt 5 Dock Chroma features the following I/O:

  • 1x 1Gb Ethernet (RJ45)
  • 3x Thunderbolt 5 Downstream
  • 1x Thunderbolt 5 Upstream
  • 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 10Gb/s
  • 1x USB-C2 Gen 2 10Gb/s
  • 1x UHS-II SD Card Slot
  • 1x 3.5mm Headphone/Microphone Combo Port with 7.1 Surround Support
  • 1x M.2 NVMe SSD Slot with PCIe Gen4x4 Support (up to 8TB)

Personally, I’m a little bummed to see only gigabit Ethernet, as most high-end systems are running 2.5Gb or 5Gb Ethernet nowadays. It just seems like a strange corner for Razer to cut, but this may not matter for some users.

Thanks to the immense bandwidth of Thunderbolt 5, Razer’s Thunderbolt 5 Dock Chroma supports up to three 4K external displays running at 144Hz. For creatives who need detail more than multi-monitor support, the Razer Thunderbolt 5 Dock Chroma even supports an 8K external display running at 60Hz.

Importantly, Razer’s Thunderbolt 5 Dock Chroma provides 140W of Power Delivery to any laptop it connects to, while also actively cooling itself and the internal NVMe SSD with a built-in fan:

But here’s where things get interesting – for PC gamers who are fully subscribed to the RGB lighting craze, Razer’s Thunderbolt 5 Dock Chroma has down-firing RGB lights that integrate with the Razer Synapse software to keep all your Razer peripherals in sync. This is unlikely to faze Mac users, who prefer a more minimalist approach to most things in general, but still neat because it sets Razer’s option apart from the competition.

Razer’s Thunderbolt 5 Doc Chroma is available from Razer’s website in either black for $399.99 or mercury for $389.99.
