Apple classifies 2013 Mac Pro & other items as vintage, makes various AirPort devices devices obsolete

Another day, another behind-the-scenes update from Apple – this time having to do with what the Cupertino-based company considers vintage and obsolete products.

As first shared by MacRumors, Apple’s Obtaining service for your Apple product after an expired warranty web page was updated to add new products to the list.

Starting today, Apple now considers the following devices to be “vintage:”

  • 2013 Mac Pro
  • 2019 13-inch MacBook Air
  • 2019 iMac
  • 2018 11-inch iPad Pro
  • 2018 12.9-inch iPad Pro
  • iPhone 8 (128GB version)

As we’ve explained previously, Apple defines a vintage device as one in which the company stops distributing and offering them for sale both more than 5 years and less than 7 years ago. Vintage Apple products are nearing the end of their life, and this is Apple sending a strong warning that availability of replacement parts is winding down. Once the existing supply dries up, that’s it.

At the top of that list is the 2013 Mac Pro, which infamously became known as the “trash can” Mac at launch because of its unique cylindrical shape.

In addition to classifying new devices as “vintage,” a few previously vintage devices have ascended to “obsolete” status. Those devices include:

  • AirPort Express (2nd Generation)
  • AirPort Time Capsule (2TB)
  • AirPort Time Capsule (3TB)
  • AirPort Extreme (802.11ac)

Apple defines a device as obsolete when Apple stops distributing and offering it for sale more than 7 years ago. In this stage, Apple stops providing first-party parts and services for repairs, leaving end users of these devices to fend for themselves in the aftermarket.

Apple regularly updates its list throughout the year, ensuring that customers are aware of changes to the repair part supply chain. With that in mind, it’s only a matter of time before more Apple devices become vintage and/or obsolete.
