Google says Chrome v138 will be the last update to the web browser that will support macOS 11 Big Sur

Google’s Chrome web browser remains one of the most popular in the world, being used on more than half and just under three-quarters of all devices worldwide, and that includes Mac users.

Unfortunately for some Mac users, Google revealed in a Chrome Platform Status bulletin this week that they plan to drop support for macOS 11 Big Sur in future releases and that Chrome version 138 will be the last version to support it.

The bulletin reads:

Chrome 138 will be the last release to support macOS 11; Chrome 139+ will no longer support macOS 11, which is outside of its support window with Apple. Running on a supported operating system is essential to maintaining security.
On Macs running macOS 11, Chrome will continue to work, showing a warning infobar, but will not update any further. If a user wishes to have their Chrome be updated, they need to update their computer to a support version of macOS.
For new installations of Chrome 139+, macOS 12+ will be required.

Google explains that starting with Chrome version 139 and later, the host system will need to be running macOS 12 Monterrey or later. Older systems will stop receiving updates past Chrome version 138, but they can continue using the outdated version once newer updates start to release.

Companies regularly phase out support for older operating systems when building apps, as they tend to focus on the here and now more than legacy systems. Most users are updating their devices regularly, and the small number of holdouts aren’t worth the development and programming costs associated with multi-platform support.

If macOS 11 Big Sur users wanted, they could just use the built-in Safari web browser or choose another third-party option entirely.
