Photoshop for iPhone has arrived, carrying with it a bunch of free features

Today, Adobe released the free Photoshop for iPhone app, which arrives more than five years after it debuted the iPad version of the popular graphics software.

Photoshop for iPhone includes the latest AI capabilities like removing distractions from images with seamless background replacement. The app is a free download, but a subscription us required to access extra premium features.

However, Photoshop for iPhone offers many functionalities in the free version. And if you need powerful mobile editing features, a subscription is definitely worth it because the smartphone version includes many of the editing features from the desktop version of Photoshop, including layering, masking and blending.

Photoshop for iPhone also packs the latest AI capabilities, such as Generative Fill and Generative Expand, removing various distractions from images using the Spot Healing Brush feature, creating visuals with Generate Similar and Reference Images, deleting unwanted objects with the Remove Tool, and so forth.

The app brings precision editing to the palm of your hand, including making pinpoint adjustments, swapping backgrounds and more. The software arrived years after the release of Photoshop for iPad, which debuted on the App Store in November 2019.

Photoshop for iPhone lets you access Adobe Stock images to use in your projects, in addition to your Lightroom content and images from other Adobe apps and services. The app also provides various tips and tricks to help you level up your skills.

What features are available for free?

Adobe’s announcement mentions these free features:

• Create unique images and designs by combining, compositing and blending images with core Photoshop tools and features, including selections, layers and masks
• Remove, recolor or replace parts of an image with the intuitive Tap Select tool
• Utilize advanced removal tools like the Spot Healing Brush to brush away distractions in seconds
• Leverage powerful generative AI tools powered by Adobe Firefly including the popular Generative Fill and Generative Expand to easily add new elements to designs and quickly edit photos
• Navigate across workflows easily with direct integration with creative apps including Adobe Express, Adobe Fresco and Adobe Lightroom
• Add, replace and create with a vast library of free Adobe Stock assets

Premium features available with a subscription

Some of the paid features include Magic Wand, Object Select, Lighten and Darken, Clone Stamp, Remove Tool and Content-Aware Fill, to mention but a few. For those wondering, Adobe has said that a version of Photoshop for Android phones is “coming soon.” For more info, visit the Adobe blog.

How to download Photoshop for iPhone

Adobe Photoshop for iPhone is free to download from the App Store. Photoshop for iPad is a separate download. iOS 17.0 or iPadOS 17.0 or later is required to use the app. Both versions are free to download and use, but a subscription is required to unlock all of the advanced features along with more than 20,000 fonts.

If you already have a subscription to Photoshop, you can use Photoshop on your iPhone, iPad  and the web as part of your existing plan without paying extra.

You can purchase Adobe’s new Photoshop Mobile and Web plan subscription plan ($8/month or $70/year) directly in the app. With it, you can access all paid features and use Photoshop on desktop computers, mobile devices like phones and tablets, and the web. Speaking of which, the web interface was upgraded today to support many features from the smartphone and desktop versions of Photoshop.
