Apple is expected to release its first foldable iPhone in 2026, with a starting price estimated to range between $1800 and $2000.
MacRumors passes along a Forbes article citing analysts at investment banking firm UBS who estimated that a foldable iPhone might start at between $1800 and $2000.
The figure is based on a teardown analysis of Samsung’s Z Fold SE, which has an estimated bill of materials pegged at $790, excluding costs associated with research and development, marketing, advertising, sales and other costs.
A foldable iPhone might cost between $1800 and $2000
Analysts estimate that a foldable iPhone could hit about a four percent lower bill of material cost at about $759, “thanks to cost savings on memory, application processors, and camera modules, even as premium materials drive up casing and hinge costs.”
UBS speculates that Apple’s manufacturing expertise may allow the company to price a foldable iPhone at the lower end of the $1,800–$2,000 range. Earlier reports said a foldable iPhone would start at north of $2000, with some reports even suggesting an eye-watering price tag of $2400.
Don’t draw parallels between a foldable iPhone and the Vision Pro, which starts at $3500 and is the most expensive consumer headset. Apple knows that a folding iPhone doesn’t stand a chance if priced as an aspirational product.
It’s not unusual for foldable devices to be priced significantly higher than flagship smartphones because they have basically two screens and use flexible display panels and sophisticated hinge mechanisms that regular smartphones don’t.
Premium, but not aspirational
A foldable iPhone could have limited availability at launch, however, with estimates ranging from 10 million to 15 million units for the first wave. With a price within the $1800-$2000 range, a foldable iPhone would compete with other foldable smartphones, including Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Fold 7, which starts at $1900 for the 256-gigabyte version.
Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold is priced slightly lower at $1800, while the Galaxy Z Flip 7 starts at $1100 for the 256-gigabyte model. At any rate, a foldable iPhone seems destined to become Apple’s most expensive phone; by comparison, the flagship 1TB iPhone 16 Pro Max is priced at $1600, while the base 256GB model is $1200.
A foldable iPhone should feature an invisible display crease (courtesy of Samsung), a reliable stainless steel with titanium alloy hinge, a 7.8-inch inner screen, a 5.5-inch outer screen, two rear cameras, a selfie camera and Touch ID.
It’s thought to launch alongside the iPhone 18 lineup in the fall of 2026. The device is currently in the prototype testing stage, with Apple aiming to kick off mass production in the second half of 2026.
