Gemini is no longer limited to the browser—it has now arrived as a native app for MacBooks. In a blog post published Wednesday, Google announced that “the Gemini app is now available as a native macOS experience.” With this move, the tech giant aims to position its AI as a system-level assistant, catching up with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have offered dedicated Mac apps for some time.
Google confirmed that the feature will be available for free to all Gemini users globally. Users can download the app from the company’s official website. However, the feature is limited to MacBooks running macOS 15 or later.
How the Gemini native app works
If you’re a Mac user, you can access Gemini instantly using a simple shortcut—press Option + Space. This lets you open the AI tool from anywhere, eliminating the need to switch between browser tabs or apps. You can also share your MacBook’s screen or files with Gemini, enabling it to analyse on-screen content, summarise complex charts, and explain documents in real time, making the experience far more context-aware.
The app is designed to seamlessly fit into your workflow. Whether you’re writing and need to fact-check something quickly, working on spreadsheets and require formulas, or looking to generate images and videos, Gemini can assist without interrupting your flow. It also includes creative tools like Nano Banana for image generation and Veo for video creation, further strengthening its role as an all-in-one AI assistant.
Meanwhile, Google is also expanding Gemini’s capabilities across platforms. On Chrome, the company has introduced a new “Skills” feature that lets users save frequently used prompts, making it easier to complete repetitive tasks in a single click. These Skills can be used for productivity as well as everyday activities like comparing prices or finding recipes. In addition, Google is bringing free NEET UG mock tests to Gemini, developed in partnership with Physics Wallah and Careers360, helping students better prepare with exam-like practice. Notably, this feature is currently available only in English. To access the feature, you can simply type, “I want to take a NEET mock exam.” And Gemini will then give you a full-length mock question paper in a format like a real test.
