YouTube Shorts teams up with Veo, Google AI video model

YouTube is bringing video AI model, Veo, to help creators generate high-quality backgrounds as well as six-second clips.

With AI taking over every platform, YouTube has announced that it will integrate Google Deepmind’s AI video generation model, Veo, into YouTube Shorts. According to the video platform, this step will help creators generate high-quality backgrounds as well as six-second clips. Launched this year, Veo was introduced as a cutting-edge video generation model, which competes directly with OpenAI’s Sora. During the event, Made by YouTube, the company explained that with Veo integrated with the platform, creators can use it to brainstorm video ideas within YouTube Studio. They can also produce AI-generated thumbnails and respond to followers with new AI-assisted comments, it added.

Veo in YouTube Shorts: How will it work

The introduction of Veo in Shorts signifies a notable improvement over YouTube's earlier AI-powered innovation, Dream Screen, launched in 2023 for generating Shorts backgrounds. Veo's key strength lies in its ability to edit and remix existing generated footage, giving creators unparalleled flexibility and creative freedom in video production.

With Veo, this is the first time creators will get to create a six-second video clip for Shorts. Creators can generate four custom images with Dream Screen by entering a prompt and clicking 'Create', then select one to animate into a video. This feature enables creators to seamlessly fill gaps in their videos, enhancing narrative flow and visual cohesion.

YouTube revealed that it will integrate Veo into Dream Screen later this year. The creations on Shorts will be watermarked using DeepMind’s SynthID tech to mark them as AI-generated.

YouTube: New features

Veo is not the only new feature coming to YouTube. The video streaming platform has also announced other features, including Jewels feature that allows viewers to send digital gifts during livestream. It aims to foster increased interaction between viewers and creators. The company has also stated that the Jewels will be first launched in the US.

YouTube has also upgraded its dubbing capabilities. The platform is expanding language support to include French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. It is also testing a natural speech mode, called expressive speech. The technology aims for more authentic audio transfer and preserves creators' tone, pitch, and background sounds in dubbed content.

YouTube is also broadening its Community feature to additional channels, enabling creators and their audiences to connect and engage through shared posts, replies and real-time interaction. Meanwhile, it has also decided to expand its Hype feature to new markets, which is initially piloted in Brazil, Turkey, and Taiwan. The feature enables users to show support for their favorite creators. Videos with the most hype points are showcased on a special leaderboard.
