- Apple could release an in-house C2-modem in 2026
- It is rumoured to debut with the iPhone 18 Pro models
- iPhone 17 series is expected to feature C1-modem, similar to the iPhone 16e
After launching the iPhone 16e with the first-gen in-house modem, the rumour has it that it will be upgraded in 2026. According to the leaks, the iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to debut with a second-gen 5G modem -- Apple's C2 modem. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has also previously reported that the C2 modem will better compete with Qualcomm's modems in current iPhones by adding support for the ultra-fast 5G standard known as mmWave, a feature the C1 modem lacks. Reports suggest that Apple is also actively testing its C2 modem and its successor, the C3, which is anticipated to launch in 2027. By then, Apple aims to surpass Qualcomm's modem technology.
Apple claims that the C1 modem is the most power-efficient modem ever used in an iPhone, performing well in both real-world and simulated 5G speed tests. That said, this year, the iPhone 17 lineup is rumoured to be powered by a similar modem as the iPhone 16e -- Apple's C1 modem. The iPhone 17 Pro models are expected to continue using Qualcomm modems, as Apple's supply agreement with Qualcomm extends through March 2027. This gives Apple ample time to transition to its custom-designed modems.
Given that Apple develops chips years in advance, it's no surprise that the company is already working on its next-generation C2 and C3 modems.
iPhone 18 Pro: Camera leak
Expected to debut in 2026, the iPhone 18 Pro models are rumoured to feature a variable aperturea first for an iPhone. This innovation would offer users greater control over depth of field, especially when combined with enhancements like Apple's Portrait mode, which simulates a "bokeh" effect by blurring the background.
Adding to the speculation, the Dutch company BE Semiconductor is said to be supplying the technology for the aperture bladesthe mechanical components that adjust the aperture size. This advancement would allow the iPhone 18 Pro’s camera to dynamically regulate light intake, optimising performance across various shooting conditions.
With the iPhone 18 series expected to launch in 2026, there are still several months before its official debut. As a result, this information should be taken with caution. The exact details will be confirmed at the official launch event. Whether or not Apple will also upgrade the iPhone 18 Pro’s sensor size is still unclear, but such an enhancement could pave the way for even more natural and dynamic bokeh effects in photos.
