Apple started rolling out the new M4 chipset to its Mac line on Monday with the iMac. Next day came the new Mac Mini and today we are getting the new MacBook Pro 14 and the MacBook Pro 16.
As expected, the new MacBook Pro 14 comes powered by the M4 chipset, although variants powered with the M4 Pro are also available. As expected, Apple is now equipping even the base variant with the 16GB RAM. In India, the price of the MacBook Pro 14 starts from Rs 169,900. The price of the MacBook Pro 16, with M4 Pro chipset, starts from Rs 249,900. As Apple is doing of late, all new MacBook laptops are immediately available with hefty discounts — Rs 10,000 to start with — for students.
The new MacBook Pro is available for per-order from today. It will be reaching customers and stores, including the two Apple stores in Delhi and Mumbai, on November 8.
"MacBook Pro is an incredibly powerful tool that millions of people use to do their life's best work, and today we're making it even better," said John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. "With the powerful M4 family of chips, and packed with pro features like Thunderbolt 5, an advanced 12MP Center Stage camera, an all-new nano-texture display option, and Apple Intelligence, the new MacBook Pro continues to be, by far, the world's best pro laptop."
Apart from a more powerful chipset — and by all indications we can get a sense that the M4 is indeed a beast — there are not many changes in the MacBook Pro. The design, in particular, remains the same. One big upgrade, however, is the RAM in the base variant. The M4 laptops get a minimum of 16GB RAM while the M4 Pro and M4 Max variants get 24GB RAM.
The MacBook Pro also gets the nano-texture display options, which too is something new for the Apple laptops because until now we have seen this option on its external displays. Another upgrade is in the built-in USB-C ports. Now they support Thunderbolt 5, which enables transfer speed of up to 120GB/s.
As it launches the new MacBooks, Apple is also highlighting the Apple Intelligence features, which are powered by a combination of generative AI systems like ChatGPT and Apple's own in-house LLM. The Apple Intelligence is part of macOS Sequoia 15.1 although users in different countries and different regions may not get all the AI features at the same time. The Apple Intelligence suite remains a work in progress.
Apple says that combining generative models with industry-first privacy protections, Apple Intelligence uses the power of Apple M4 and its Neural Engine to unlock new ways for users to work, communicate, and express themselves on Mac.
One more thing:
Even as it launches the new MacBook Pro, Apple is also changing one part of the MacBook Air: the amount of RAM. The company says that the MacBook Air will now start with 16GB RAM in its base variant. The price of the MacBook Air will continue to be Rs 99,900.
