Met Office urges people to 'prepare their property' and 'avoid going out' amid Storm Éowyn warning

by · NottinghamshireLive

Storm Éowyn is expected to bring strong winds and disruption across the UK with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning. With the chance of power cuts, building damage and injury, the storm is predicted to hit Nottinghamshire and most of the UK all-day Friday January 24.

Travel disruption is likely for road, rail, air and ferry services - with higher journey times and possible cancellations. Warnings have also been made about flying debris, which can cause danger to life and damage to infrastructure.

Taking precautions to ensure your safety in a storm now will save you hassle and potential danger later this week.

The Met Office has shared the following tips to keep you and others safe in high-winds.

1. Prepare your property

Protect your property and people from damage by ensuring that loose outdoor items are secure prior to the storm. This might include garden furniture, bins, trampolines and plant pots. Make sure your shed doors are securely shut and locked to prevent damage.

2. Planning journeys

Driving conditions are likely to be hazardous and delays are expected on roads, trains and air. To prepare for a journey:

  • Plan your route in advance by checking for delays and closures
  • Pack essentials such as food, warm clothes and water in your car
  • Take a fully-charged phone and charging device with you on your journey
  • Listen out for travel updates via radio

3. Drive carefully in strong winds

Strong winds can cause you to lose control of your vehicle more easily than usual. Keep your speed low and both hands firmly on the steering wheel to reduce the impact of wind gusts.

Be especially mindful of other drivers. Take extra care when overtaking or passing high sided vehicles and caravans. Cyclists, lorries, motorcyclists and buses should all be given more room than usual.

4. Coastal safety

If you live or work by the coast, extra precautions should be taken to stay safe in a storm. Be especially aware of large waves. Even if you're on the shore, large waves can sweep you off your feet and drag you out to sea.

Keep your dog on a lead and be mindful if you're walking by cliffs, as winds will be stronger than usual.

5. Avoid going out if you can

Being outside in high winds should be avoided where possible due to the risk of injury. If you must go outside, avoid walking near buildings and trees to reduce the risk of coming into contact with flying debris.

Most importantly, stay alert and vigilant in windy weather. To ensure your own safety, and the safety of others, avoid taking unnecessary journeys or risks.
