Lenovo’s laptop with a rollable display is coming in June for $3500 and up
by Brad Linder · LiliputingThe Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 is the first laptop with a rollable display that can extend to give you 50% more screen space at the touch of a button. When the screen is rolled up the computer looks like a relatively normal notebook with a 14 inch display. But when extended, you get an extra-tall display that measures 16.7 inches diagonally.
Lenovo has been showing off early prototype versions of this technology for a few years, but now the company has announced plans to bring it to market. It won’t be cheap though: the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 is expected to sell for $3500 and up when it goes on sale in June, 2025.
The unusual screen is likely responsible for much of that price tag, but the computer also has a reasonably decent specs including support for up to an Intel Core Ultra 7 (Series 2) processor (most likely Lunar Lake, based on details like Intel Arc graphics and support for up to 32GB of LPDDR5X-8533 memory), a 5MP IR webcam, support for WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, and dual Thunderbolt 4 ports.
But the screen is clearly the start of the show. It’s a 120 Hz OLED display with 100% DCI-P3 color gamut and up to 400 nits brightness. In its 14 inch state, the screen is a 2000 x 1600 pixel display, but when you extend the display to 16.7 inches it becomes a 2000 x 2350 display.
The rollable design means that you get extra screen space without the need to carry around a portable monitor. And while it only increase the screen height by 50 percent, which makes it sound like you don’t get as much additional screen space as a second monitor would provide, Lenovo notes that when fully extended the display works sort of like two 16:9 screens with one stacked on top of the other (because you may notice that when the screen is retracted, it has a 5:4 aspect ratio rather than the widescreen ratios you typically find on modern laptops).
Oh, and in case pressing a button to extend the screens feels like too much work, Lenovo says you can also do it by waving your hand up or down in front of the camera.
Despite the rollable display and all the extra hardware involved in allowing it to extend and retract, the notebook is relatively compact, measuring just 0.78 inches thick and weighing just 3.73 pounds.
