Emdoor introduces a 16 inch AMD Strix Halo laptop

AMD’s Strix Halo processors may nominally be mobile chips, but so far most of the PCs using the chips have been mini desktop computers, with a few notable exceptions including the Asus ROG Z13 Flow 2-in-1 gaming tablet and a few upcoming handhelds.

Strix Halo laptops have been rare, but it looks like one more might be on the way. Chinese ODM Emdoor has recently added details to its website for a 16 inch laptop with support for up to an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor.

The EMDOOR EM-959-NM16ASH-1 supports up to 128GB of quad-channel LPDDR5x-8000 memory and has two M.2 2280 slots for PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 storage.

The display is a 16 inch, 2560 x 1600 pixel screen with support for 165 Hz or 180 Hz refresh rates. And the laptop has a metal body that weighs 2.45 kg (5.4 pounds). Other features include a 1080p IR webcam, dual microphones, stereo 2W speakers, a fingerprint sensor, and backlit keyboard.

Ports include:

  • 1 x USB4 Type-C (w/DP 1.4 and 100W USB-PD)
  • 1 x USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C
  • 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A
  • 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A
  • 1 x HDMI 2.1
  • 1 x 2.5 Gb Ethernet
  • 1 x 3.5mm audio
  • 1 x microSD card reader

Wireless options include Intel AX200 (WiFi 6), AMD RZ616 (WiFi 6E) or AMD RZ717 (WiFi 7) and the computer comes with either an 80W or 99Wh battery and a 19V/230W DC power adapter.

There are three processor options:

Cores / ThreadsFreqCacheGPU
Ryzen AI Max+ 39516 / 32Up to 5.1 GHz80MBRadeon 8060S (40 CUs, up to 2.9 GHz)
Ryzen AI Max 390 12 / 24Up to 5 GHz76MBRadeon 8050S (32 CUs, up to 2.8 GHz)
Ryzen AI Max 3858 / 16Up to 5 GHz40MBRadeon 8050S (32 CUs, up to 2.88 GHz

Each chip is part of AMD’s Strix Halo lineup, featuring discrete-class integrated graphics and an XDNA 2 NPU that delivers up to 50 TOPS of AI performance.

They’re also pretty power-hungry chips by mobile standards, so the laptop also features dual “ultra-large” fans, three heat pipes, and four exhaust outlets.

There’s no word on pricing, availability, or whether any brands will work with Emdoor to bring this laptop to market under a different name anytime soon. But it’s likely that if and when this 16″ Strix Halo laptop hits the streets, it will carry a high price tag.

The only other Strix Halo laptop I’m aware of at the moment is the HP ZBook Ultra 14 G1a, which is a 14″ mobile workstation that was introduced earlier this year, and which currently sells for $1999 and up.
