Sapphire Edge AI is a mini PC with up to AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 Strix Point
by Brad Linder · LiliputingSapphire Technology is a company best known for making graphics cards, motherboards, and other PC components. But the new Sapphire Edge AI is a full-fledged mini PC, complete with an AMD Ryzen AI 300 series processor and a compact motherboard with support for up to 96GB of RAM and two SSDs packed into a custom chassis that measures just 117 x 111 x 30mm (4.6″ x 4.4″ x 1.2″).
I haven’t seen pricing or availability details yet, but Sapphire says the little computer will be sold as a barebones system with three processor options.
Entry-level configurations will feature an AMD Ryzen AI 5 340 Krackan Point processor, while higher-priced models with be available with Ryzen AI 7 350 Krackan Point or Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 Strix Point chips.
All of those processors combine AMD Zen 5 CPU architecture with RDNA 3.5 integrated graphics and an NPU capable of delivering up to 50 TOPS of AI performance. The differences come down to how things like the number of CPU & GPU cores, the top frequencies supported by each, and the amount of cache memory available:
| Cores / Threads | Freq | Cache | GPU | NPU | TDP | |
| Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 | 12 (4 x Zen 5 + 8 x Zen 5c) / 24 | Up to 5.1 GHz | 36MB | Radeon 890M (16 x RDNA 3.5 cores @ up to 2.9 GHz) | 50 TOPS | 15 – 54W |
| AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 | 8 (4 x Zen 5 + 4 x Zen 5c) / 16 | Up to 5 GHz | 24MB | Radeon 860M (8 x RDNA 3.5 cores @ up to 3 GHz) | 50 TOPS | 15 – 54W |
| AMD Ryzen AI 5 340 | 6 (3 Zen 5 + 3 Zen 5c) / 12 | Up to 4.8 GHz | 22MB | Radeon 840M (4 x RDNA 3.5 cores @ up to 2.9 GHz) | 50 TOPS | 15 – 54W |
No matter which processor is included, the Sapphire Edge AI features two SODIMM slots for DDR5 memory plus two M.2 slots for PCIe NVMe SSDs: one is an M.2 2280 slot, while the other only supports M.2 2242 or shorter cards.
There’s also an M.2 2230 slot for a WiFi & Bluetooth card.
Ports include:
- 2 x USB4 Type-C
- 3 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A
- 1 x USB 2.0 Type-A
- 2 x HDMI 2.1
- 1 x 2.5 GbE Ethernet
- 1 x 3.5mm audio
- 1 x DC power input
The system comes with a 19V/6.32A (120W) power adapter.
One more note: while the Sapphire Edge AI is new to me, it looks like the company has actually been showing it off for quite some time. The folks at Computer Base got an early look all the way back in March.
