The under-display camera tech isn’t new for smartphone users. Devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and RedMagic gaming phones have already implemented this technology. But Lenovo is bringing this tech to laptops for the first time. At CES 2025, Lenovo showcased its new Yoga Slim 9i that is claimed to be the world’s first laptop with “camera-under-display” technology.

This tech allows the Lenovo laptop to achieve an impressive 98% screen-to-body ratio. While the camera quality might not rival that of a MacBook, the screen design eliminates the need for notches or pop-up webcams like the one seen on the latest Honor MagicBook Art 14.

What’s It Like Using An Under-Display Camera?

The under-display camera technology has its own benifits and downfalls. On the plus side, it delivers a fullscreen experience by overlaying pixels over the camera, which are turned off when the webcam is in use. This provides a more intuitive experience for content consumption and gaming—definitely an improvement over the MacBook's notch display.

The camera is faintly visible if you look closely, but the fullscreen experience outweighs this minor drawback for many users. For instance, I’m currently using the Honor MagicBook Art 14 for its modular camera setup because I prioritize a fullscreen experience on the go and rarely take video calls.

However, the trade-off is reduced camera quality. Every under-display camera I’ve used so far has performed worse than its traditional counterparts. I expect the same for the new Yoga Slim 9i. And Lenovo seems to be aware of this issue as it’s teckling it by integrating a 32MP webcam and collaborating with Visionary.ai, an AI image processing company, to correct image distortions.

Turns out, fitting such a camera into the slim lid of a laptop isn’t easy and Yoga Slim 9i’s design required Lenovo to add a bump to its lid.

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 9i is a premium laptop packed with features. It has a 14-inch OLED display with a sharp 3840 x 2400 resolution, a peak brightness of 750 nits for HDR content, and a 120Hz refresh rate. The screen is protected by impact-resistant glass to guard against drops and scratches.

The screen is said to have an “impact-resistant glass” to protect it against drops and scratches. It measures 0.57 inches at its thinnest point and weighs 2.76 pounds (1.25kg), which isn’t too heavy. Under the hood, it’s powered by the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor, paired with up to 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of storage.

I/O options are limited, with only two Thunderbolt 4 ports but they’re spread out with one port being available on each side. Other features include WiFi 7 connectivity, a 75Whr battery, 1.5mm key travel for better typing comfort, and a larger trackpad.
