Google Meet on Android Auto is finally available to everyone

by · Android Police

After almost two months of waiting, the full rollout of Google Meet on Android Auto has begun.

Google's kept us waiting for this one, with the first news of people getting Meet in their cars coming in mid-April of this year. But now, as reported by 9to5 Google, all Android Auto users should be able to get Google Meet on Android Auto.

Time to meet your favorite new Android Auto calling app

As mentioned, we first heard about Meet coming to Android Auto almost two months ago now. It turned out that was a limited rollout, so if you were feverishly trying to get into calls in your car at that point, it's likely you were disappointed.

But this time, the rollout seems to be the real thing. 9to5 Google have tested a few devices in their cars and discovered the app now seems to be more widely available than before.

As before, the app only supports voice calls, rather than video calling, so don't expect to be taking part in any video calls any time soon. Which makes sense, you're driving.

Setting up the app to work with Android Auto does seem to be a bit of a pain, as you'll apparently have to open and restart the Meet app on your phone before you're able to properly use the app on Android Auto. However, once that's over, you should have easy access to your calls as usual.

As previously discovered, there's a tab for Scheduled calls and one for your History, and you can tap a contact to start a call.

When actually in a call, your phone jumps into On-the-Go mode, which increases the size of your buttons, making them easier to hit, but removes the camera option and limits other abilities.

Ultimately, Meet for Android Auto is a bit of a limited experience, but given you're using it while driving, it was always going to be.

If you're interested in trying out Google Meet in Android Auto, then just make sure you have the latest versions of each app and it should work. If not, wait a little longer until you have access to Google Meet v361.0.92 and Android Auto v16.8.
