Does Hasselblad and Oppo's renewed partnership spell trouble for OnePlus?

by · Android Police

Camera experts Hasselblad and smartphone maker Oppo have announced they will continue the partnership which has seen co-developed cameras arrive on phones including the Oppo Find X8 Ultra and the Oppo Find N5 folding phone. The news came at an event held in Gothenburg, Sweden, which is Hasselblad’s home, along with a tantalizing hint at what’s to come.

The pair are developing a “next generation mobile imaging system,” which the team believe will “establish a new standard for quality and experience in mobile imaging.” The pair also promise the new system will continue to showcase unique Hasselblad colors and image quality. Oppo’s chief product officer Pete Lau said, “With the extension of our collaboration, we will push the boundaries of mobile imaging even further.”

While it’s exciting Hasselblad and Oppo are continuing to work together on smartphone cameras, it does leave us wondering what it means for Hasselblad and OnePlus. Oppo and OnePlus are closely tied together these days, and although it’s not explicitly mentioned in the latest press release, Oppo’s link with Hasselblad came after OnePlus's deal. What’s interesting is, it does quietly blend the period in through the dates used.

OnePlus and Hasselblad came first

OnePlus announced its partnership with Hasselblad in March 2021, while Oppo didn’t announce its partnership news until February 2022. In-between this in June 2021, Oppo and OnePlus confirmed the two brands would integrate together and share research and development, among other things. The news of Oppo and Hasselblad’s renewed partnership states it comes four years after beginning, which would include OnePlus’s time with the camera maker.

The blending together of OnePlus’s and Oppo’s timelines is confusing because OnePlus is not mentioned in the press release at all, and it has not made a separate announcement regarding its own relationship with Hasselblad at the time of writing. Based on the original partnership announcement, OnePlus and Hasselblad’s time together ended in 2024, which would make the OnePlus 13 the last smartphone to come with Hasselblad branding and color science technology.

The rumored OnePlus 15 will feature an “independent image brand,” according to a well-known industry insider account

Unfortunately, the situation leans into ongoing rumors the OnePlus and Hasselblad partnership has ended and won’t be renewed. The future OnePlus 15 will feature an “independent image brand,” according to a well-known industry insider account, Digital Chat Station, on Chinese social network Weibo, a rumor published in June 2025.

Similar rumors about the end of the OnePlus and Hasselblad partnership appeared in 2024, but all included Oppo’s name. We now know this is not the case for Oppo. It's not clear where OnePlus fits into the announcement, or if it's about to embark on a new camera journey without the backing of a recognizable camera brand behind it.

Android Police has contacted OnePlus for comment on the situation, and also with Oppo to understand how long the new partnership is scheduled to last for, which is information missing from the press release. We will update here with any comments from the two companies.
