Here's how Google Messages will incorporate Nano Banana's magic
by Chethan Rao · Android PoliceThe Gemini 2.5 Flash Image model, popularly known as Nano Banana, has taken the world by storm with its image generation capabilities. In typical Google fashion, this image model has also been integrated into other products, including Lens and AI Mode, while evidence of the feature was also spotted on Google's messaging app.
We were treated to an early glimpse of Nano Banana's integration into Google Messages not too long ago, and we're now getting a more elaborate look at the functionality, hidden within version 20251031 beta of the app.
Digging through this version of the app, Android Authority found that the necessary code for the feature is already in place, with all that's left to do is for Google to enable it, potentially via a server-side push.
When enabled, users will be able to "Remix" their photos while selecting an image from the media picker (Gallery). Specifically, a Remix button will appear in the bottom-left corner of the image on the preview page, which is the last step before hitting send. Tapping the Remix button for the first time displays a "Remix your photos" overlay.
A prompt box then lets you "Describe the changes you want," with a long list of suggestions on offer. You can tap Remix again if you want to make additional changes to the image.
Some limitations will be in place
As you would expect, Remix will only trigger when you select a single image from the Gallery. Additionally, code within the app reveals that Google will place daily limits on the number of edits you can make in this fashion. It's unclear whether paid subscribers (Google AI Pro/Ultra and others) will have access to more generations per day as compared to users on the free tier.
In addition to remixing your photos from the media picker, users can also tap into Nano Banana by long-pressing an image in the chat. In an earlier implementation of this feature, a banana icon appeared in the header while long-pressing an image within the chat. This behavior is (thankfully) no longer present in this near-final release.
Given that all the groundwork has been laid for this particular feature, Android Authority speculates that it could be rolled out imminently.
If Remix sounds familiar, it's because it was rolled out to Google Photos a few months ago with similar capabilities. We don't expect Messages to be the last Google app to get Nano Banana's viral image editing features.
What do you make of this upcoming feature addition?
