Qi wireless charging could finally get the upgrade we've all been waiting for
by Timi Cantisano · Android PoliceApple's MagSafe has been a pretty great feature for the brand's products, giving users the ability to reliably charge devices with a system that locks everything into place using magnets. Now, it started with Apple's laptops and was then expanded to its phones in 2020, and for the most part, it's one of those simple features that Android fans have been lusting over since its introduction.
So when the technology was finally available for Android phones, the excitement was at an all-time high. Unfortunately, we've yet to see most device manufacturers adopt it. Google is one of the few in the world to actually utilize it and has also come out with its own accessories to support the technology. The adoption rate has been underwhelming to say the least.
Progress with more power
Despite all of this, there are reports out there that state that the Wireless Power Consortium is looking to jump Qi wireless charging up to 50W in the near future. A special meeting was held with Xiaomi, along with some other brands, to discuss the new technology and its implementation.
Now, don't expect this type of product to hit store shelves this year, with the report from ITHome stating that it could see an introduction sometime in 2028 (via 9to5Google). As of now, the iPhone and Google Pixel support up to 25W wireless charging using Qi technology. This new bump would take the number up by two times, making it a huge leap.
Of course, wired charging is still superior, offering impressive charging speeds that can easily reach over 50W without breaking a sweat. Some models from outside the US can reach 100W, and although rarer, some models cross the 200W barrier. But if wireless charging is improving, I'm all for it.

I use wireless charging pretty much daily despite its slower speed, just because I have a stand that can charge my watch, earbuds, and phone. It keeps things clean by removing all the usual wires, which can make things look cluttered. But, when it comes down to it, it's all about preference. Let us know in the comments how you charge.
