The new PSSR is rolling out to PS5 Pro, starting with Resident Evil Requiem

Sony has announced that the upgraded version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is rolling out for PS5 Pro, starting with a native integration with Resident Evil Requiem, and with a backward compatible system level toggle coming soon.

The new PSSR is the result of Sony and AMD’s partnership on Project Amethyst. This project led to FSR 4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution) for the Radeon 9000 series GPUs on PC, and has been adapted to work with the dedicated upscaling hardware in the PS5 Pro. In fact, Mark Cerny’s announcement states that “With the updated PSSR, we’re delivering the very latest of this co-developed technology with a further six months of refinement for PS5 Pro players.”

Future games will be able to adopt this new version of PSSR natively as well, with full support and integration coming with a PS5 system software update in March, and Cerny stating that multiple existing games will be upgraded to the improved PSSR at that time.

However, games that don’t upgrade won’t be left behind. There’s around 50 games with PSSR support currently, all having been adapted in some way to take advantage of the PS5 Pro specific feature. Thankfully, because of that work, Sony is able to provide a system-level upgrade toggle to force the use of the new PSSR. Once the March update is out, you’ll be able to head to the Screen and Visio settings and select “Enhance PSSR Image Qualtiy”. This will apply the new algorithms and techniques to any game that currently supports PSSR.

Conceptually, this is very similar to how interchangeable upscalers are on PC, whether swapping out the .DLL files or using OptiScaler to inject the use of a different upscaler using support for a different version as the basis. It’s quite likely that this will work pretty much flawlessly in most games, but there’s always the chance that there are some edge case issues – Silent Hill 2 Remake, for example, launched with a difficult implementation of the original PSSR and needed patching.

Regardless, this is great, and long-awaited improvement for the PS5 Pro. We look forward to its rollout next month.
