Met Office issues update on how cold Greater Manchester will be today with -9C forecast for some areas
by Stephen Topping · Manchester Evening NewsGreater Manchester is in the midst of a deep freeze - with temperatures set to plunge again. The wintry start to 2025 continues today (January 9), with bitterly cold conditions hitting the UK.
At the Met Office weather station closest to Manchester in Rostherne, four miles south of Altrincham, temperatures of -8C have been recorded this morning. Temperatures well below zero are set to continue across Greater Manchester in the hours to come, with a dry, sunny day.
The region is expected to see mist and cloud cover this morning, making way for sunny intervals by 10am. Clear skies are expected to follow in Greater Manchester from late afternoon, continuing into another cold evening.
Temperatures will climb to 0C by late morning in most areas, but that figure will only be reached by 1pm in Oldham, according to the Met Office. Highs of 3C are expected in Wigan, 2C in most of Greater Manchester and 1C in Oldham.
Bitter lows are expected again tonight, particularly in more remote areas. Most of the region is set for lows of -4C, including Manchester, with -5C expected in Bolton and Rochdale, and -6C in Oldham. In Saddleworth and Ramsbottom, temperatures of -9C are forecast overnight.
