by · Manchester Evening News

The latest weather warning to hit Greater Manchester has been issued by the Met Office. Brits are in the midst of a deep freeze with ongoing sub-zero temperatures, plus widespread snow and ice.

Greater Manchester has seen major disruption with roads, airport runways and schools closed in recent days. Wigan was covered by a warning for snow and ice overnight.

But other parts of the region were hit by a surprise dumping of fresh snow this morning (January 9) - with Trafford, Stockport and south Manchester particularly affected, as well as Wigan. Temperatures are only due to hit zero at lunchtime and climb to highs of 1C or 2C today.

Temperatures will swiftly fall below zero again this evening - hitting lows of -9C in more remote areas of Greater Manchester. Unsurprisingly, another warning for ice has now been issued.

The warning covers western areas of the region - including Wigan, plus parts of Salford and Trafford boroughs. It comes into force at 4pm today and lasts for 18 hours, until 10am on Friday.

The warning also covers Cheshire, Merseyside, the West Midlands and Wales. People are urged to take care and expect travel disruption on Friday morning.

A Met Office spokesperson added: "Scattered wintry showers on Thursday evening will slowly fade overnight, leading to the risk of icy patches on untreated surfaces as temperatures fall below freezing. Isolated snow accumulations of 2-4 cm will be possible, more especially in Wales on hills above 150m elevation."
